I have speculated for a long time and have came to the devastating conclusion that so many new bands are, through no fault of their own, victims of rock and pop music’s awkward search for novelty.
Where do you go now for inspiration? Which stone has been left unturned? Which narrowest niche genre has not been prised open and then mutated into the new Pop Sound Of Now!?
So, a moment of consideration for the fearless new bands of today and what they are shooting at..
Silence Fiction is a new band mainly based in Sunderland, Tyne and Wear. They’re currently unsigned but personally, I just think that’s because they’re new – they need putting out there!
They formed in January 2013 and they are already writing their own songs. Yeah, a couple of covered songs are still in there, but what can you expect?
The band consists of Matthew Dixon for main vocals and guitar, Owen Cook as the main guitarist, Shaun Payne with backing vocals and bass while Nathan Taylor sits at the back thrashing the drums, and they don’t half sound great.
So, here’s what they are aiming for:
“We want to
bring music back to life! People now listen to pop, and that’s no good. Music
is going downhill – no one wants to write proper songs with proper lyrics. It’s
all about cheating on each other, drugs and almost every song in the charts has
something about sex or sleeping around in it.
Hopefully,
we’ll be like a mix between bands like Linkin Park, Papa Roach, Biffy Clyro,
Killswitch Engage, Zebrahead, 30 Seconds To Mars, Green Day, Muse and System of a
Down? They’re not all
too alike, so it’s a massive challenge, but we really wanted to try out
something now in the hope of more people wanting to listen, and then maybe get
interested in more alternative music genres.
Now, that’s
a pretty bold-ass pitch, and I don’t think that they’ve set a simple target at
all, but everyone’s gotta love these guys, AND I wouldn’t be surprised if they’ve
managed to plop themselves right in the middle of where they want to be.
I asked main
singer and guitarist Matthew how he felt the band was doing, and “what would
you do if you made it to your goal?”
He simply
replied with “I think we’re doing pretty
well.. we’re gigging, so tats a great start!
As for your
main question, I don’t know.. I think I would laugh, have a party… I don’t
think I would change, well, I hope I don’t change. Like, you know when you get really
stuck up celebrities who think they’re better than everyone else?
I would
definitely hope that everyone stayed together. It’d be a shame if we didn’t.
Even if we don’t get far, to be recognised would be a huge accomplishment.”
Fingers
crossed they make it to the big show. The work these guys put into the band is mental,
and the outcome is just outstanding!
